A very interesting book by a talented popular writer. Today, this would probably be considered alternative fiction such as by Mr. Turdledove. The book reflects the times in the 1890s twenty years before WW I.William Le Queux was a famous writer and an outspoken critic of Britain's weak military defenses before the First World War. This was at a time when the great powers in Europe had gone to mass armies, equipped with the latest rifle and machine gun technology, as well as long range artillery with exploding shells. This book was written twenty years before the start of WW I in 1914.
He thought the British were not paying enough attention to their navy, and had allowed it to shrink, and have obsolete equipment and ships. The obsolete equipment included such things as 350 muzzle loading cannons on close to 50 ships, when the rest of the world had moved on to breech loading cannons for their ships. He considers that the guns on British warships overall are inferior, and that British ships are slower than their counterparts in other navies. This was written before the introduction of the centerline mounted all big gun ships which started with the HMS Dreadnought, which revolutionized navy ships around the world. The HMS Dreadnought instantly made older ships which had a mix of smaller guns mounted on the sides obsolete. He considers that the British Navy was too small.
He considers that the British Army was too small and behind in types and quantities of armaments compared with the other European powers.

This is a work of fiction where France and Russia form an alliance and attack Great Britain. Great Britain and France were historic enemies going back many centuries. It is based on the fact that France and Russia really did form an alliance in 1892, shortly before when this book is written. The actual WW I sides were different with Britain allied with France, Italy, and Russia (until 1917 and the Russian revolution when Russia made an independent peace with Germany and Austria Hungary) against Germany and Austria Hungary. In the 1890s given all of the European great power political and other maneuvering, this book was regarded as plausible, and thus generated a very big response out of the British people.
The war starts with British Fleet being moved out of position by a spy prior to the start of the war thus opening up her coast for invasion. Then when the war starts, French and Russian troops are landed in England and Scotland. The British army is outmanned, but British volunteers flock to the colors to defend their homeland. The British colonies including India and Australia send troops to defend the mother country as well. The battle are horrific with many people killed and a great deal of distraction of cities.
Great Britain is hard pressed at sea to defend herself, and ultimately wins in the Med with help from Italy, who becomes an ally. In the Atlantic they ultimately win with help from the Germans, who also become an ally. German and Italy invade France in turn, since France invaded Britain. Germany invades Russia for the same reason.
He addresses technology in the era before the invention of the airplane in that he has a large balloon, or what we might call a blimp today, introduced to drop explosives on a English city. Many atrocities are committed including naval bombardment of defenseless costal cities in England, and then tit for tat bombardment of French costal city. All in all an interesting and well written book.

Exceptionally well researched. Descriptions so vivid I could see the scenes in my minds eye. Highly prophetic of future warfare. just got the protagonists mixed up a bit.
